Mumbai to Alibaug Weekend Trip: The Complete Plan

Ferry from Gateway of India or drive via Panvel? Here is exactly how to get from Mumbai to Alibaug and what to do once you are there.

Why Alibaug Works Perfectly From Mumbai

You can leave Mumbai after breakfast and be on a beach by noon. That combination of short travel time and a genuine change of scenery is why Alibaug remains the city’s favourite weekend escape — and Nagaon, slightly away from the town crowd, is its calmer corner.

Option 1: The Ferry (Fastest & Most Fun)

Catamaran ferries run from Gateway of India to Mandwa jetty through the day (roughly every 45–90 minutes; more frequent in tourist season). The crossing takes about 60–90 minutes depending on the service, and a connecting bus usually meets the ferry for the 30–40 minute ride into Alibaug town.

Tip: book ferry tickets online in advance during long weekends — walk-up slots sell out by mid-morning.

Option 2: Ro-Ro Vehicle Ferry

If you want your car with you, the roll-on/roll-off ferry carries vehicles between Mumbai (Ferry Wharf / Bhaucha Dhakka) and Rewas, close to Mandwa. You drive on, enjoy the sea crossing, then drive straight to your resort.

Option 3: Drive via Panvel

  • Distance: about 95–110 km depending on your starting point
  • Typical time: 3–3.5 hours; longer on Friday evenings and holiday weekends
  • Route: Mumbai → Panvel → Vadkhal Naka → Alibaug → Nagaon
  • Roads are good; the last stretch past Vadkhal is single-carriage but smooth

A Sample Two-Day Itinerary

  • Day 1 morning: depart Mumbai early; check in and have a long Konkan lunch
  • Day 1 evening: pool time, then sunset at Nagaon Beach followed by a BBQ dinner
  • Day 2 morning: Kolaba Fort at low tide or water sports at Nagaon
  • Day 2 afternoon: late lunch in Alibaug town and catch the evening ferry back
