Pune to Alibaug: Planning Your Weekend Getaway

Around four hours by road from Pune, Alibaug makes an easy two-day break — here are the routes, stops and a practical itinerary.

The Road Routes From Pune

There are two popular ways to drive. The classic route runs Pune → Lonavala → Khopoli → Pen → Vadkhal → Alibaug (roughly 145–160 km, four to five hours with a chai stop). The alternative via Tamhini Ghat is prettier after the rains but slower and best attempted in daylight.

Start by 6–7 AM and you will reach Nagaon in time for lunch.

Good Stops Along the Way

  • Lonavala or Khandala viewpoints for a first chai break
  • Imagica/Khopoli belt for fuel and restrooms
  • Pen — famous for Ganesh idol workshops and quick misal stalls

No Direct Train — But Buses Exist

There is no railway line to Alibaug. MSRTC buses run from Pune (Swargate/Shivajinagar) to Alibaug taking around five hours, typically including a change at Panvel or Roha. For a short weekend, self-drive or a rented cab remains the most convenient option.

Making the Most of Two Days

With only two days, keep the plan light: one beach afternoon at Nagaon, one sightseeing window (Kolaba Fort or Revdanda), and plenty of pool-and-lawn downtime. Trying to cover Kashid, Murud and everything else in a single weekend is the most common mistake.
